Time to blow all the arguments for right to work out of the water

My friend Ross Eisenbrey of the Economic Policy Institute just wrote a great column in which he debunks or destroys every argument I’ve ever heard for right to work laws. Right to work (RTW) is designed to weaken unions, and transfer wealth and power from workers to the morally inexplicable and indefensible rich.

• The radical right and their mouthpieces say right to work invites investment and creates jobs. Yet seven of the ten states with the highest unemployment are right to work.
• According to Ross, “RTW reduces union coverage by 9.6 percentage points… weakening unions leads to lower wages and salaries for union and non-union workers alike.”
•“RTW is associated with a $1,500 reduction in annualized wages.”
“Eight of the 10 worst states in terms of quality of life are RTW, while eight of the 10 best are non-RTW.”

In a single quote, Ross says exactly why we have to fight RTW with all our might:

“The fact that unions are responsible for workplace benefits, higher wages, and the right to overtime pay is the very reason Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the Koch Bothers, and other corporate interests hate them… RTW laws were originally designed by business groups in the 1940’s to reduce union strength.”

And those laws have been a burden ever since.
